How to get more hours in CS2 (with your PC off)
Updated October 6, 2026 · 35,971 hours farmed on HourFarming so far
In Counter-Strike 2 your hours are the first thing people see. Teammates open your profile after a strange round, FACEIT treats low-hour accounts with extra suspicion, and a fresh-looking account gets called a smurf or a cheater before it gets the benefit of the doubt. This page covers why the number matters, what idling adds (and what it never will), what the 2026 ban wave was really about, and how long closing an hours gap takes.
Why CS2 hours matter
Hours on record are CS2’s quickest credibility check, and they get read in three places. Other players read them first: after a good round or a bad one, someone checks your profile, and double-digit hours read as a new account. FACEIT reads them too — its registration rules require Prime Status to link CS2 and ask players with few Counter-Strike hours to verify their identity before they can play. FACEIT doesn’t publish the threshold. And matchmaking weighs how established an account looks: Valve has said Trust Factor considers your activity on Steam and in CS2 — what that does and doesn’t mean is in our Trust Factor guide.
The profile checks and “how many hours do you have?” questions are community habit, not Valve policy. But they decide how much suspicion you play under.
What idling adds — and what it never will
Steam counts playtime whenever your account reports CS2 as running. That doesn’t need a match, a server or even the game files: an idle session adds hours to your profile exactly like a played one.
What idling does not add is anything earned in a match. XP, profile rank, the weekly drop and your CS Rating all come from playing. That also means idling won’t unlock Premier on its own: Premier needs Prime Status and profile level 10, and levels come from match XP. Idle hours make the account look established; they don’t rank it up.
The March 2026 ban wave, explained
On 27 March 2026 Valve banned roughly 960,000 CS2 accounts in a single day (Esports Legal News, 1 April 2026). The targets were farming bots: script-driven accounts built to collect the weekly item drop without a human playing, run at scale.
Idling for playtime is a different thing. A cloud idle session never launches CS2, plays no matches, earns no XP and receives no drops — none of the economy those bots were mining. VAC looks for cheats inside the running game, and here there is no running game. We won’t pretend that makes it risk-free: Valve doesn’t endorse inflating playtime and nobody can promise what it does next. Our safety guide covers where the real risks are.
The hours gap, in real time
Say you want your profile to show 500 CS2 hours and you’re not there yet. Here’s what closing the gap costs — playing it manually versus letting the playtime build on its own:
CS2 is free, but it has to be in your library — press Play once in Steam if it isn’t.
Ways to idle CS2
The classic way is leaving CS2 open on the main menu. It works, but it ties up your PC, runs a full game client for nothing, and stops the moment you shut down. The general options (client open, self-hosted idler, cloud) are compared in the Steam hour farming guide.
The cloud version is what HourFarming does: your account farms CS2 hours 24/7 from our servers — no game install, PC off — and pauses on its own whenever you actually play. You add the account by scanning a QR code with the Steam app, so we never see your Steam password. The free plan covers 100 hours a month; the Solo plan ($1.99/month) farms one game nonstop with no hour limit — see pricing.
FAQ
Can you idle CS2 to get more hours?
Yes. Steam counts playtime whenever your account reports CS2 as running, so an idle session adds hours to your profile like a played one. What it does not add is XP, profile rank, weekly drops or CS Rating — those only come from playing matches.
Do you need to own CS2 to farm CS2 hours?
CS2 is free to play, but it still has to be in your Steam library — press Play once in Steam or add it from the store page. Prime Status is not needed to farm hours; it is needed for Premier and for FACEIT.
Do idled hours count for FACEIT?
FACEIT requires Prime Status to link CS2 and asks accounts with few Counter-Strike hours to verify their identity before they can play. It does not publish an hour threshold. Idled time is Steam playtime like any other, but FACEIT can look at more than the hours number — idling raises the number, not your match history.
Will idling CS2 get me VAC banned?
VAC looks for cheats in the running game. A cloud idle session never launches CS2, so there is no game process to inspect. The March 2026 ban wave targeted bot accounts farming weekly drops, not playtime. Valve does not endorse inflating playtime, though, and nobody can speak for its future policy — farm on accounts you are comfortable with.
Does idling unlock Premier or weekly drops?
No. Premier needs Prime Status and profile level 10, and both levels and the weekly drop come from XP earned in matches. Idling adds hours on record only.
How many CS2 hours do I need to look established?
There is no official number. Players who check profiles after a match tend to treat a few hundred hours as normal and double digits as a fresh account or a smurf — community practice, not a rule.
